Travel by Ship

Until the middle of the last century long distance travel, especially between countries separated by seas, was almost exclusively by ship. Airplanes were too expensive, too new and still too scary to many travelers. Even today, many people's fear of flying means that they feel that they cannot enjoy voyages from Europe to the Americas, or from America to Asia.

However, there is an alternative. Long distance travel by ship is not dead. Many people may imagine that it may have been consigned to the doldrums of the cruise ship joy ride style of journey, where you start in one port, cruise to a very strict timetable to a few other ports of call, where disembarking for a more leisurely appreciation is not possible, and ultimately return to your originating port in as little as three days or perhaps three weeks at the extreme.

However, many hundreds of working freighters take passengers and can take you to the more exotic or mundane destinations.

Cargo Ship Travel Requires Flexibility

Flexibility is critical when taking this method for transportation.

• An itinerary may include a port you've always wanted to visit, but the ship may cancel that call.
• You may expect to spend three days in Sydney but end up getting only one.
• The ship may arrive home later than you had planned.
